50 Million U.S. Households Call For HVAC Home Service During Holidays

A leading global provider of fleet management solutions, Fleetmatics Group PLC, has announced the outcome of a KRC Research survey that revealed how many Americans call for home repairs during the holiday season, and how to deal with residential service providers such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.

Based on the survey results, more than 44 percent of Americans, or an estimated 50 million households, have called for home repairs on plumbing, heating, electrical, and other home services during the holiday season such as Thanksgiving Day until New Year’s Day. It was also found out that of the repair calls that were made, 30 percent were for heating, 27 percent for plumbing, and 18 percent for electrical-related issues.

The survey also revealed that almost 68 percent of Americans perceive that holidays are the most difficult and busy time of the year, so it is quite difficult to find quality service providers for their homes. Also, approximately one in every three people reported having a bad experience calling for service during the holidays. Some of the reasons include workers arriving late, slow or sometimes incomplete work, and the inefficiency to find or assign someone for rush or last-minute appointments.

Kathleen Finato, Fleetmatics Chief Marketing Officer said, “While home repairs are the last thing on people’s minds during the holiday season, it is clear that unexpected issues arise. Our service-based customers are working very hard to save the holiday season for tens of thousands of Americans, and there is clearly a high demand for their services during this time of year.”

Fleetmatics analyzed historical data from approximately 140,000 service vehicles across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, and pest control in the United States to further understand fleet activity during the holidays. The company tried to identify, on average, how far every service vehicle travels and how many stops it makes during the six-week period between Thanksgiving Day and New Year’s Day. One example is that of an electrical worker who travels almost 5,976 miles and makes an average of 329 stops. The number of miles that he traveled is almost equivalent to traveling from Boston to Los Angeles and back.
