Latest ASHRAE Research Names 30 Measures for Energy Savings in Buildings
Based on the results of the newly-approved research initiated by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the application of 30 special energy savings measures across all building types and climate zones made building owners cut their energy use by nearly half.
The national weighted change is 47.8 percent more energy efficient than Standard 90.1-2013 in terms of site energy, and 47.8 percent more energy efficient than 90.1-2013 according to source energy.
According to a report from theNEWS, the ASHRAE 1651-Research Project entitled “Development of Maximum Technically Achievable Energy Targets for Commercial Buildings: Ultra-Low Energy Use Building Set” discussed how multifamily and commercial building become energy efficient in the coming years.
Jason Glazer, the Principal Engineer for GARD Analytics, the organization that supervised the project, said, “The value of establishing such ultra-low-energy targets for buildings is two-fold. These targets will inform building design professionals what may be achieved if the first cost is not considered and challenge the creativity of those professionals to achieve similar results in actual designs with the real-world constraints of first costs. They also will help advance design guides, standards, and codes by providing an ultimate goal.”
He also added that the researchers made a list of energy efficiency standards that can be considered in the design of non-residential buildings that included both common and advanced energy efficiency measures.
Thirty standards were chosen for additional analysis from a list of 400 measures. There are 16 prototype buildings that were consistent with Standard 90.1-2013, or the Energy Efficiency Standard for Buildings except Low-Rise Residential that were used as baseline models. Generally, the measures were applied to reduce internal loads, reduce building envelope loads, reduce HVAC distribution system losses, decrease HVAC equipment energy consumption, and major HVAC reconfigurations.
Glazer also added, “It is useful to understand how far energy efficiency measures can go to reduce the use of energy in the built environment. It is also important to understand that many of the measures used in the project are widely available today.”
